Papito (Grandfather)

This poem is dedicated to my Grandfather who will forever be in my mind and heart, in our family we never called him "abuelo" but "papito". I hope you enjoy!

Laying here awaiting for your warm embrace

My ears long to listen to your voice

Only when I hear you I feel like I have a choice

In this eternal void I can only think back to your smile

Years have passed, but it feels like centuries since I felt your presence.

You are my guiding light in the night sky

Every night when I look to the moon I wonder

Did you ever wish you stayed here longer?

The cold air whispers the chilling truth:

Your heart no longer beats.

Even so, I fight with my memory to never forget your smile

That never faded even after walking a mile

As the skies grow ever darker

I hold on to your memory for hope.

Your daughter has kept me sane

You’d be so proud of her if you were here

She’s grown so much from when you last saw her

She’s even kept herself from crying when remembering your last breath

Instead of tears, her eyes light up with the same fervor yours did

And although It may seem as if she cannot move forward

Her spirit alone is enough to reform any coward

Thank you for leaving her as a gift for my life.

For without her example

I don’t think I will ever know what to look for in a wife

Keep smiling, and send my regards to everyone up in heaven

Let them know that no matter how old I become

You will always be my Papito.
